The events of the Dexter Season 4 finale aggravated more than a few viewers — for understandable reasons. Dexter’s kind-hearted wife Rita Morgan (née Bennett) was murdered by the most notorious villain ever to appear in the Showtime series. As Dexter Morgan’s profanity-spewing cop sister Debra, Jennifer Carpenter appeared in every episode of Dexter along with her onscreen brother. Debra’s personal and professional arc was often challenging, culminating in her murder by the serial killer the Brain Surgeon in the final episode of the show.
During the penultimate season, she not only knew Dexter’s secret, but also covered for and helped him. This led to her being forced into a situation that went against everything that she stood for — killing an innocent woman to protect Dexter and herself. Look for his name in just about any article related to Batman. After the heartbreak of Season 4, Michael C. Hall had to endure a different kind of saddening challenge during production the the following season after making his diagnosis of Hodgkin’s lymphoma public in January 2010. He continued to work on Dexter while receiving chemotherapy, during which he would wear a wig to hide his hair loss, and announced that he made a full recovery the following April and has been in remission ever since. While his fans were obviously pleased to see him survive, some would have rather his character not been granted the same fate.
When Dexter appears reluctant, Debra goes to her boss Jacob Elway and offers to apprehend Hannah for a substantial reward. She tries to capture Hannah, who says the only reason she spared her life was because she didn’t want to hurt Dexter. Debra reluctantly drops the case, and even allows Hannah to hide from the police in her apartment. By the end of the season, she has regained her confidence, and she is more determined than ever to improve her career and get a detective shield.
Harry had been a Homicide Detective, and Debra yearned to be one, also. As perhaps the most vocal of the characters on the TV series, she created quite a list of her very own unique curse words and phrases, as opposed to a simple usage of the “F-word” by a character such as Joey Quinn. The only other character to swear nearly as often as Deb was Sergeant James Doakes.
Regardless of her often cold and sometimes rude attitude towards him, Elway helps Deb out of a tough spot and tries to be kind to her and make her laugh. However, their professional relationship as well as their friendship ends when Deb returns to Miami Metro, and Elway doesn’t take it well. Deb is in a really bad place for the short time she sees Briggs and their relationship is barely real and in no way healthy. However Deb does seem to develop some kind of feelings for Briggs and find comfort in his companionship since she tells Dexter, “I felt okay around him”. In the middle of the season, Debra finds out that Quinn, who believes that Dexter was involved in Rita’s murder, has been investigating Dexter behind her back. Quinn decides that his relationship with Debra is more important than his unfounded suspicions about Dexter, and stops his investigation.

Hall also won TVLine’s Performer of the Week ending January 15, 2022, for the finale episode. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Dexter executive producer Clyde Phillips explained the decision to kill Rita. “The story evolved and it kind of became inevitable. We knew that we had to do more than kill Trinity,” he said. “It’s a little bit of a corner that we paint ourselves into…We SingaporeLoveLinks had to raise the bar to as high as possible.” While it would have been sad to see Dexter die, I think a greater sort of poetic justice would have been seeing Debra be forced to kill him, and her end up with his son Harrison and be with Joey in her beach house. In a desperate attempt to end her misery and right a wrong, she flips Dexter’s car into a river with them both inside.
He tearfully removes her life support as an act of mercy, carries her body to his boat and buries her at sea. Showtime hit series Dexter is confirmed to be returning at some point in the not-too-distant future after the cable network announced the news. Dexter is going to be making a comeback with a limited series with lead actor Michael C. Hall reprising his iconic role as the eponymous ethical serial killer.
